Emergency Response and Operations AAS

Two-Year Associate of Applied Science Degree

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Emergency Response and Operations provides students with a curriculum specific to the student’s individual needs in addition to the knowledge and skills needed in today’s changing public safety workplace. The program develops education, skills and techniques for planning, responding and mitigating various emergency situations within the student’s specific discipline with emphasis on effective response and operations. The curriculum combines coursework in public safety emergency services with a general education component.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

EMT Emphasis

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of the EMS provider in a variety of rescue situations, including demonstration of safe and defensive driving techniques in the operation of an emergency vehicle.
• Perform a comprehensive patient assessment to articulate and implement a treatment plan for a variety of medical and traumatic emergencies.
• Utilize evidence-based practices along with quality improvement to facilitate the delivery of safe care for both medical and traumatic emergencies.
• Implement self-care strategies to address the impact of both emotional and physical stress of the emergency providers, while demonstrating workplace expectations for attendance safety, conduct and professionalism.
• Demonstrate leadership, teamwork and decision making in the management of small and large scale emergency incidents.
• Utilize therapeutic and professional communication skills with a wide variety of interactions with other health care professionals and patient/family.

Wildland and/or Structural Fire Emphasis

• Students acquire the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience to become certified to pursue careers in public safety and emergency services.
• Students learn about the history, mission, organizational culture, operational procedures and systems, and certification requirements of public safety and emergency services organizations.
• Students learn and are proficient in receiving and relaying emergency and non-emergency communication and responding to emergency calls.
• Students learn the importance of personal and team safety and are trained and proficient in the use of personal protective equipment and safety protocols.
• Students learn and are proficient in performing the necessary actions to ensure life safety, control urgent situations, and conserve property at an emergency scene.
• Students learn and are proficient in performing the necessary preparedness and maintenance actions to assure emergency response readiness.

Criminal Justice Emphasis

• Explain the criminal justice system in terms of how various elements interact to accomplish the mission of the criminal justice system.
• Interpret case law and statutes pertaining to specific criminal justice roles.
• Describe the constitutional rights of citizens, offenders, and victims as they apply to state, federal, and procedural laws.
• Identify legal and moral responsibilities of criminal justice professionals as they relate to cultural diversity and establishing positive community relationships.
• Describe the dynamics of interviews and interrogations to as they relate to conducting effective investigations.
• Recognize behaviors that indicate substance abuse and/or mental health issues during encounters with individuals.
