SUR 155 - Surgical Pharmacology4.00 credits This course explores the surgical technologist’s role in pharmacology and anesthesia. Topics include terminology, action, use and modes of administration of drugs and anesthetic agents, side effects and contraindications, factors that influence anesthesia selection, identification of monitoring devices, complications related to anesthesia and possible interventions, transfer of drugs from non-sterile to sterile areas, and care and precautions in identifying drugs and solutions in the operating room. Theories and principles related to monitoring and medication management for the operative patient in the scrub and circulating roles will be emphasized. Prerequisites: HIM 212 with a grade of “C” or better. Corequisites: SUR 155L.
