Emergency Response and Operations AAS

Two-Year Associate of Applied Science Degree

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Emergency Response and Operations provides students with a curriculum specific to the student’s individual needs in addition to the knowledge and skills needed in today’s changing public safety workplace. The program develops education, skills and techniques for planning, responding and mitigating various emergency situations within the student’s specific discipline with emphasis on effective response and operations. The curriculum combines coursework in public safety emergency services with a general education component.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

EMT Emphasis

• Summarize the information and demonstrate the skills necessary to pass the state practical exam for EMT.

Wildland and/or Structural Fire Emphasis

• Demonstrate safe use of fire suppression equipment in training situations.
• Identify safety risks using principles of structural or wildland fire behavior.
• Use defensive and safe driving techniques in the operation of emergency vehicles.
• Predict fire behavior in a variety of conditions.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of teamwork in simulated emergency scenarios.

Criminal Justice Emphasis

• Explain the criminal justice system in terms of how various elements interact to accomplish the mission of the criminal justice system.
• Interpret case law and statutes pertaining to specific criminal justice roles.
• Describe the constitutional rights of citizens, offenders, and victims as they apply to state, federal, and procedural laws.
• Identify legal and moral responsibilities of criminal justice professionals as they relate to cultural diversity and establishing positive community relationships.
• Describe the dynamics of interviews and interrogations to as they relate to conducting effective investigations.
• Recognize behaviors that indicate substance abuse and/or mental health issues during encounters with individuals.
