Aviation Science: Helicopter

Getting Started

The Aviation Science Helicopter AAS degree program has special admission requirements. The first step to entering this program is to take the college’s free placement test and meet with KCC Admissions Staff. Placement tests can be schedule by calling the KCC testing center at 541-880-2334. There are entry-level expectations for skill levels in reading, writing and mathematics. If students have questions about the requirements, they may call KCC Student Services at 541-882-3521. Failure to complete the placement test will delay entry into the Aviation Science Helicopter Program.

For admission to the program, an application is required. Aviation Science Helicopter Application packets are available from the KCC Admissions Office in building 3. Applications must be returned to KCC Before the published application deadlines. All accepted applications will receive an Aviation Science Helicopter Orientation. We recommend that students contact KCC Admissions Department at 541-882-3521 for details if they are considering the Aviation Science Helicopter AAS degree.

Course of Study

The Aviation program trains individuals to work as professional pilots in the air transportation industry. Opportunities in the pilot career field include: commercial pilots; piloting for a private corporation; charter pilot; and providing flight instruction n to new pilot students.

• Students will receive multiple industry relevant certificates throughout their AAS degree.

• Students will become certified flight instructors with instruments.

• Students will receive professional ground and private pilot licenses.

• A majority of the labs are designed to be working within a one-to-one ratio student to instructor.

The AAS Aviation Science Helicopter degree is designed to produce high-quality graduates that will be prepared to enter the field of aviation pilots. This field is an excellent high wage career that is global in scope. Klamath Community College’s workforce partner, Precision Aviation, is a well-established local company offering numerous local industry contracts, federal approval, and a curriculum that enables students to begin working in the industry upon graduation.

The AAS Aviation Science Helicopter degree provides students with the mandatory flight hours along with industry specified instruction. This degree provides students with the knowledge, skills and training necessary for them to achieve helicopter certification through to certified flight instructor with instrument. Instruction is designed to place students in a learning environment where the majority of the lab instruction will be a one-to-one ratio of student to instructor. This instruction style ensures that students will receive academic knowledge necessary to be a safe pilot and pass the FAA knowledge exams. Federal Aviation Regulations 14 CFR parts 61 and 141 set forth the qualifications, testing, and certification requirements for pilots, flight instructors, and ground instructors.

Program Requirements


Students are required to take a placement test to determine their academic level and readiness to enter the program; some exceptions may be made for short term certificates. General education prerequisites of Math 70 and Writing 121 will be assessed in this placement test.

Candidates for the program must satisfactorily complete all requirements, including a minimum of 91 credits, 17 of which are in the general education components (all currently available online). Successful pursuit of this program requires students to possess collegiate skills in reading, communication, computation, and critical thinking.
